International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and What it Means

What is an IBCLC?
In short, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is the
highest certification that a lactation specialist can receive. There are many other certifications lactation assistants can receive although some may have only required a one week or a weekend training and/or very little professional or hands-on experience.  It is important to know the education and experience of the assistance you are receiving.

SO......Why choose an IBCLC?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) must pass a comprehensive international exam and re-certify every 5 years to insure that she stays up-to-date with current research and information. Part of the scope of practice of an IBCLC is to be “evidence based”- using current information. IBCLC’s work in a wide variety of health care settings, including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health and WIC clinics, and in private practice. Their experiences may be varied. As in any profession, skills and personalities vary. It is important to find someone that you trust and someone who can help you reach your breastfeeding goals.

An IBCLC is certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners® (IBLCE®), which is accredited by the U.S. National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
Do I need a lactation consultant?
Breastfeeding is an activity you will be doing 8-12 times a day and will be the only type of feeding the baby receives for the first 6 months (minimum). This calculates to approximately 490 hours during the first 6 months. Feeding is the most time-consuming and important activity for the baby. The benefits for the baby, the mom, the family, and the community are colossal! Basking Babies can help you have the breastfeeding experience you desire. Find out if you might need a lactation consultant then contact Basking Babies today.
