Basking Babies' 5th Annual Fall Conference

BREASTFEEDING: SCIENCE AND ART

November 5, 2018 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Purpose: This conference is designed to provide the most current strategies for health care providers assisting breastfeeding mothers and babies.

Intended Audience: Healthcare and community professionals (doctors, midwives, nurses, lactation consultants, dentists, doulas, peer counselors, etc.) who assist mothers and babies with breastfeeding.

Schedule: Registration starts at 8:15 a.m. The Welcome starts at 8:55 a.m. There will be two short breaks and a lunch break.

Issues that Impact Breastfeeding
The Infant Microbiome
Environmental Toxins and Breastfeeding

Location: The PARC Event Center, 5374 NE 12th Ave, Pleasant Hill, IA

Continuing Education: 
Lactation consultants can earn 6.5 L CERPs as allocated by the IBLCE, Verification Number C1881143
Nurses will be awarded 6.6 contact hours from Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines, Iowa Board of Nursing Provider #17.*
Continuing education credits for CPE hours for Dietitians is 6.5
*Full attendance is required; no partial credit will be given.
Fee: Register on or before October 7th for the Early Bird registration fee of $85. Registrations after October 7th will be $95. Fee includes lunch, refreshments and materials necessary to fulfill continuing education requirements. No refunds will be issued.

​Lunch: ​Lunch provided. There are also several restaurants nearby. 
Objectives:
  1. Describe the effect of obesity, thyroid issues, diabetes, and PCOS on pregnancy and lactation.
  2. Explain how infant and maternal issues can impact breastfeeding and how to initiate, maintain, and milk supply.
  3. Describe infant conditions that may impact breastfeeding and risk factors related to labor and birth.
  4. Understand how breastfeeding affects a healthy microbiome, causes of microbiome disruption; adverse effects of microbiome depletion, and the role of diet and probiotics in the health of the microbiome.
  5. Learn the science of toxins and breastmilk and ways to lower the toxin load in breastmilk.

CHERI STANDING, MD -INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE PEDIATRICIAN is board certified in Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and Integrative Medicine. She has served as the Pediatric Medicine Attending Physician at Mercy Hospital, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, St. Paul's
Children's Hospital, and Blank Children's Hospital. She is a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine, American Academy of Pediatrics (Fellow), Pediatric Integrative Medicine Section of American Academy of Pediatrics, Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine, Physicians for Social Responsibility

MARY KAY SMITH, RN, IBCLC, CCE, FILCA - Mary Kay has been assisting breastfeeding women for
almost 30 years, first as a La Leche League Leader (accredited in 1982) and as a board certified lactation consultant since 1988. She is also a Registered Nurse and Certified Childbirth Educator and has trained Doulas and Peer Counselors in the Chicago and Detroit area. She has published numerous articles for parents and health care professionals and has worked with Baby Friendly USA as an assessor for hospitals seeking Baby Friendly Status. She is the mother of three lovely adult daughters and proud grandma of four.
