Should I try breastfeeding again? This is a common question many moms ask themselves when expecting the next baby. Approximately 80% of moms choose to initiate breastfeeding and research shows that “92% of these moms have a problem with breastfeeding.” Most women want to breastfeed and the statistics show that the majority of these will encounter some obstacles along the way.
Many of us think that breastfeeding ought to be easy, because after all, it is natural. Honestly, this a fallacy. Yes, breastfeeding is natural: milk naturally “comes in” and oftentimes it is easy…… but not until the mom and baby learn “the dance.” So let’s talk about dance.
My hubs and I love to dance…not that we are good, by any means, but after dancing together for the past 35 years we know what the next move will be. But when we started out, we were a bit clumsy (stepping on each other’s feet). We would start out, trip up a bit, stop, and then start over again, laughing and not giving up. It took us awhile to figure out each other’s moves. But with patience and practice, and a few lessons, we now have had years of an enjoyable time on the dance floor.
Breastfeeding is like dancing. You try it, and try again, maybe using a different technique or hold, having patience, and seeking out the additional help and support you need. Eventually you and your baby figure out the “moves” to make breastfeeding an enjoyable experience for many months ahead.
If you struggled with breastfeeding before or maybe this is your first time, let me offer some steps for making breastfeeding more successful!
Research shows that generally moms are not prepared for the reality of breastfeeding and the difficulties they may encounter. If moms start out right in the beginning, breastfeeding will be easier in the months that follow. Take some dance lessons (professional instruction) even before the baby is born….you will be better able to lead and follow the lead in the dance. You will be knowledgeable on how to follow your baby’s cues (dance moves). Once you have the baby, be sure to get the professional and mom to mom assistance you need (dance instructor and dance team) so that you are able to move smoothly on this unique breastfeeding dance floor. Do all you can to “Make it a Happy Dance!!!”

- Find an IBCLC you can trust and a mom to mom support group even before having the baby (the dance instructor and dance team).
- Breastfeed within an hour after birth (get on the dance floor right away)
- Do lots of skin to skin (stay on the dance floor)
- Obtain a good latch (learn the dance steps correctly)
- Feed when baby shows huger cues (follow the lead)
- Nurse frequently (enjoy dancing)
