Basking Babies Buffet - February 2016: Food 4 Thought
At the February Basking Babies Buffet Melanie Schmidt talked about the power of Healthy Fats for breastfeeding, baby, and children’s health. Healthy fats are especially critical in pregnancy, breastfeeding and in baby/toddler phase because when a baby is in the womb, the brain grows more rapidly than any other stage and then during the first year after being born, the brain triples in size. Healthy fats contribute to brain and organ development, eye development, mineral absorption, vitamin absorption, energy, nervous system development, improved mood, and much more.
As moms, we and our babies need lots of energy and constant nutrition to support health, therefore, healthy fats are great as snack options. Some easy/quick snack ideas shared were: coconut fudge, nitrate free/pasture raised turkey sticks, hard boiled (pasture raised) eggs, guacamole, hummus, nuts, almond butter protein bites, chocolate mousse (made with an avocado), omelet muffins, and smoothies.
